Taronga Zoo Sydney is looking for a motivated and willing to learn Butcher Trainee to join our nutrition team, starting in 2025! This is a fantastic opportunity for a school leaver, or adult apprentice, wanting to enter the industry and complete their traineeship.


This role is totally unique; you’ll be working in the zoo grounds, providing nutrition for animals such as seal, penguins, tigers, elephants, pygmy hippos and gorillas + so much more!
 

Taronga will support 1 paid day per week where you will complete your studies at TAFE.

About the Role…

 

The primary purpose of the Nutrition Officer - Butcher Trainee role is to meet the requirements of AMP30622 Certificate III in Meat Processing through preparing and coordinating supply and delivery of animal food to meet operational and institutional goals.

 

The Trainee is will complete 15 x competency units to achieve the AMP30622 Certificate III in Meat Processing, within a non-traditional butchery and food preparation setting.

Key Accountabilities…

  • Attend training at a TAFE facility one day per week as required to achieve the AMP30622 Certificate III in Meat Processing.
  • Prepare diets to meet nutritional needs of the collection including one to two days per week in meat processing as directed by an experienced and certified butcher in the Nutrition team.
  • Manage inventory, including receipting, ordering, handling, issuing, stock taking, quality control and storage of food products to adhere to financial policies and procedures.
  • Provide information, direct enquiries to appropriate team members, and escalate issues as necessary to maintain food safety and quality standards.
  • Maintain a clean and hygienic food preparation area and ensure equipment is maintained to remain compliant with current food safety, and worker health and safety protocols
  • Follow and assess procedures as outlined by the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) program to ensure food safety from biological, chemical, and physical hazards.
  • Maintain electronic records (inventory and production) to provide current, accurate accounting and services to stakeholders. Manage food intake trials as directed by Manager/Supervisor to reduce waste and provide information for improving diets.
  • Compile information on sustainability, price and environmental costs of products to assess suppliers and identify opportunities for improvement of supply.
  • Work effectively as a member of a high performing team including peers, volunteers and students to assist Taronga in its achievement of strategic outcomes.

About You…

We are looking for a candidate that have:

  • Must be eligible and eager to enrol in AMP30622 Certificate III Meat Processing.
  • Hold or eligible to hold a current NSW Driver’s license (if applicable age).
  • Obtain and maintain a current paid NSW Working with Children Check at own expense (if 18 years +).
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the role including repeated lifting, bending, pushing/ pulling heavy trolleys, standing for long periods, repetitive chopping
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
